COURSE SYLLABUS

I. TITLE OF COURSE: ST1125 Surgical Procedures II

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION: 5 credit hour lecture

This online course is designed to help students utilize knowledge related to anatomy and pathophysiology, and surgical procedures in the following specialties: oral/maxillofacial, cardiothoracic, peripheral vascular, neurosurgery, and plastic/reconstructive as defined by the AST Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, 6th edition. The students will also learn employability skills related to surgical technology. For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected. Corequisite: ST1127 Surgical Procedures II lab/clinical. Pre-requisite: Admission to Surgical Technology program.

III. PROGRAM AND/OR DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT:
The SCCC surgical technology program will provide an education forum responsive to the needs of the student and also responsive to the health care community, both locally and nationally, focusing on professionalism and contributing to quality patient care.

b. Demonstrate an understanding of the surgical anatomy, related pathophysiology, and surgical procedures as defined by the AST Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, 6th edition for:

iv. Neurosurgery
v. Plastic and reconstructive surgery.
c. Demonstrate and understanding of employ-ability skills related to surgical technology:
i. Develop a professional resume
ii. Develop various types of employment/application correspondence
iii. Discuss appropriate interview strategies

VIII. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
The course will be delivered to students in an online interactive format via the Internet. Students will be able to read lectures online, ask questions of the instructor via e-mail, and complete assignments and exams via the web-based learning platform. Learning opportunities will be presented in a variety of ways: reading and writing assignments; online discussions; online learning activities/games; quizzes and exams.

IX. INSTRUCTIONAL AND RESOURCE MATERIALS:
Internet, web-based course management platform, audiovisual media, textbooks, computer lab, online subscriptions.

X. METHODS OF ASSESSMENT:
a. Proctored exams
Writing assignments
Quizzes
Discussion assignments
Online subscription learning assignments
b. SCCC Outcome # 1 will be assessed and measured by class participation and writing assignments indicating comprehension of material read.
c. SCCC Outcome #2 will be assessed with writing assignments, discussion assignments and essay questions on exams.
d. SCCC Outcome #5 will be assessed and measured by the student score on course assignments and the course examinations.
e. SCCC Outcome #6 will be assessed by writing assignments and discussion assignments.

XI. Concurrent Policy
a. Clinical and theory are concurrent and both must be passed to receive a passing grade in this course. The clinical component and the theory components are both graded with a letter grade. If either is failed (grade of D or F), both courses are failed. If this occurs, a student cannot progress in the program.
